Profile of
OKOMFO ANOKYE THE GREAT NZEMA AFRICAN PROPHET AND CO-FOUNDER OF THE ASHANTI KINGDOM

Okomfo Anokye (active late 17th century) was an Nzema fetish priest, statesman, and lawgiver.
Okomfo Anokye was born in Benyin,in West Nzema-Ghana West Africa, now called Jomoro, in the late 1600s. His father was from Benyin and his mother was from Anosuazo, Eastern Nzema. His father was called Kaku Ackah And His Mother Was Called Maame Nkobɛ’. Anokye was named after his paternal Uncle Egya-Ano who was a fetish priest. The Nzema called him Ano kye which means Ano Junior.

TheAshanti and Denkyira, who were unable to pronounce his name, called him Anokye. He lived in Anosuazo near Atuabo East Nzema, where he began his priesthood. Anosuazo later became known as Anokye because of the priests frequent visitors. Okomfo Anokye later helped King Amakye, Kaku Ackah’s Uncle, to defeat the first Europeans who came to the coast of Nzemaland.

The Denkyira’s later heard of his wonders and requested his aid. Through Anokye’s help, the Denkyira’s successfully defeated the Ashanti’s. Osei Tutu, the King of the Ashanti at the time, requested Anokye’s aid. Anokye went to Osei Tutu’s aid in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Empire, with a group of his tribesmen and women. King Osei Tutu gave Anokye land to settle on after he helped them to defeat the Denkyira. The land given to Anokye to settle on was named Nzemaa right there in the Ashanti region.

After the Ashanti defeated the Denyira, Okomfo Anokye brought the golden stool from the sky and gave it to the Ashanti’s. He also put a sword on the ground as a symbol of unity between the Nzema and the Ashanti. The oath also prevented the Ashanti from fighting the Nzema and allows Ashanti’s and Nzema’s to marry each other with one single plantain as dowry. When Osei Tutu died, Okomfo Anokye’s life was in danger, so he fled and lived the rest of his life in Awukugua. Through Okomfo Anokye, Nzema’s gained the nickname, Nzema bayie, which means Nzema’s came well or Nzemas are blessed.

  1. This seems very ridiculous. How come nothing of this was ever published in any of the Ghanaian Public Text Books? We look forward to having a convincing prove from you.

  2. Woooow!!!, this is the first time I am reading about this. In fact this should have been published for everybody to read. I am sure only a few know about this.

  3. pls i need more proof of this cos i haven’t heard of it before
it could be the best story of all tym esp the marriage issue and i think it shd be promoted

    • What you’ve read is exactly what it is. It is unfortunate many Nzema’s dont know. It is on us now to let Ghana and for that matter Nzema’s know about it. This important history has to be told to everyone who needs to know.

  4. wow this is a great i have ever heard since i stated schooling in my childhood… i just his story and it was marvelous and why is that his story has not been publish in most of the text book i do really see around.

  5. Pls am doing my best as an Artist to send the truth abt this great hero across, people are saying different things even in my sch. But i will try my best..E.Y.A AM PROUD OF U

  6. Iv always been fascinated by the stories of Okomfo Anokye since i read about his exploits in primary school. It struck me today to do a litle research on him and that’s how i found this page. Honestly, your account is totally new. However, there are so many origin stories of this Ghanaian, you don’t know which to believe:
    http://www.theakan.com/Okomfo_Anokye_greatest_Akan_shaman.html
    http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Okomfo_Anokye
A litle research will reveal so many others and differences in the origins. Ewes too have their origin story (which is also quite beliveable as im one).
In the end, I think the way our traditions and stories have been undocumented right from their inceptions and transmitted via word of mouth has dissapointed us.
Anyways, dont try to convince me he’s an Nzema (however believable your account may be). I’m not disputing it though.

  7. yes there are facts in your story giving proof that the great hero was an nzema but not an Akwapem as we were initially told in other books.
Especially the name And kye meaning And junior and several other facts.
    would continue reading your stories.
    Splendid

  9. Hmmmm…amazing revelations highlighting a fact that a ‘formally uneducated’ Ghanaian,as far back as in the 17th century, could strike a deal to EASE his people of dear dowry payment for time indefinate.V ery Thoughtful!!! However, why did the Otumfo, recently, visit a place in the eastern region to pay homage to the king of anokye’s supposed village of origin? I think the custodians of the Ashanti heritage are in d best position to tell best….ONLY TIME WILL REVEAL AND UNFOLD.salute

  10. who can tell us the true story of Okomfo Anokye
From Primary 2 l’ve always heard conflicting stories of him.
some claim he is from Volta Region
other claim he is from Ewukugua in the Eastern Region
today another story telling us he is from Ezema in the Western Region
very soon it won’t surprise me another conflict story will emerge claiming him from another place and Region
